Robert Eugene Stewart 21 Arcata was fined 100 dollars for giving liquor to two minor girls. Harley Gene Johnson 19 Upper Lake also fined 100 dollars for liquor in his possession. The two girls aged 16 from Ukiah and 15 from Water Springs were placed on probation. Police picked up the group early Monday morning.
Vallejo press reports that 12th District Fair manager Al St John faced payment disputes after horses were not supplied for races. Board president Everett Cox noted two directors protested handling of the event and some races ran with one entrant. The board unanimously approved paying St John though critics urged clarification of the arrangement. St John blamed Vallejo promoter Jack Crawford for failing to provide horses. The board also to refund fees to two entrants, Adam Weisberger and Jack Henderson, who entered after the deadline.
The National Safety Council estimates 480 people may die in traffic accidents during Labor Day weekend. The council hopes to limit the three day toll to 350, the normal holiday toll for a summer weekend. Cities and states prepared plans to reduce accidents as Labor Day marks the end of summer vacations and the start of school openings.
New York reports Johnny Dio and four associates arrested by federal agents for allegedly directing the April 5 blinding of labor columnist Victor Riesel. Dio and brother Tommy plus two Hoodlum associates face charges of conspiring to obstruct justice in the high profile labor racketeering probe. Telvi’s earlier murder ties to the conspiracy is noted as case continues.
