Hemphill arrest delays jury trial in Ukiah court

Oliver Bud Hemphill known as a beefalo empire figure was arrested in Ukiah on a Nevada fugitive warrant charging 10 counts of defrauding a Reno innkeeper. Judge Luther released him on his own recognizance with a Sept. 21 court date after jury optics and photo controversy. The case moves forward with potential jury or judge trial options.

Compromiseon California tax plan backs rebates and school aid

Vance ends China talks with no firm path to normal relations

Reagan assails Carter Cuba policy and canal deal plan

Former California Governor Ronald Reagan addressed 700 Atlantic County Republicans at a Resorts International Hotel fund raising dinner in Atlantic City. Five Seek Assessor Job In Mendocino County

County Administrator Al Beltrami said five persons have taken out applications for the county assessor post after Webb Brown plans retirement October 15. Deadline to return forms is September 2 with three already submitted Art Church Duane Wells and Jack Myers. Supervisor Ernie Banker has applied and a fifth applicant remains unnamed. The board will interview all candidates and keep applications confidential until returned.

Variable clouds and showers possible along the north coast

In Northwestern California the forecast calls for variable cloudiness through Friday with a chance of showers from Shelter Cove northward today and tonight and across the area Friday. Temperatures little changed with Fort Bragg near 55 to 63 and Ukiah 55 to 70 as local strong gusty winds affect the north coast this forenoon.
