In Strasbourg France a car caused a stir when a woman passenger wore a topless bathing suit. Customs officials allowed the car to pass after she stated she had nothing to declare.
The TWU strike shut Pan American World Airways in San Francisco Los Angeles Portland Seattle and Honolulu with 2,500 workers walking out. Volunteers were sought from Honolulu to operate two flights to Los Angeles and Portland Seattle as unions pressed the carrier to honor picket lines and keep contracted MIL flights alive.
Barry Goldwater urged a negotiated peace to end the fighting in South Viet Nam at the Veterans of Foreign Wars convention in Cleveland. He warned about neutralization and Communist infiltration, and renewed calls to arm NATO with tactical nuclear weapons while pledging allies access to the Moscow Washington hot line.
State Senator Frank S. Petersen of Ukiah was named chair of Lyndon B. Johnson’s Mendocino County election drive. Petersen, a Mendocino native and former district attorney, praised Johnson’s welfare emphasis and foreign policy. He noted support across Mendocino and Lake Counties and highlighted his Senate service and law career. He and his wife Bonnie have six children.
Northwestern California weather shows fair skies with coastal overcast through Wednesday. Highs around 92 in Ukiah and 82 in Napa and Santa Rosa, nights near 54 to 57. Coastal winds west to northwest at 8 to 18 knots, strongest in the extreme north.
President Nguyen Khanh quit amid escalating protests as student rioting and Buddhist clashes flare across Da Nang and Saigon. American troops fire on demonstrators near a tense Buddhist-Catholic zone, raising anti US sentiment amid rising Viet Cong activity and a government crackdown.
Gene Learnard, Teamsters Local 980 business representative, was sworn in as a Civil Service Commission member for the Second District. He replaces interim Bob Chess after Maury Berman’s resignation, with nomination by Supervisor Martin Wener and full board approval. Learnard’s four year term was sworn in by County Clerk Jim Broaddus in Judge Wayne Burke's chambers. The commission is chaired by Tom Ashurst with Russell Ells as vice president and Dorothy Peterson and R. O. Baquette as members.
Washington says Gen Nguyen Khanh still holds real power in South Viet Nam after resigning the presidency. The State Department notes major concessions to calm riots but expects Khanh to remain on top amid a government reshuffle. Ambassador Taylor has been in close contact with Khanh as the military revolutionary council plans to elect a new chief of state and dissolve itself.
New students who moved to Ukiah and will attend Ukiah high school this year should register promptly as some classes are full. The student office hours are 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Freshmen and other newcomers must attend orientation on Friday, Sept. 4 from 8:30 a.m. to noon. bus routes remain the same. Classes begin Thursday, Sept. 10, with Labor Day and Admission Day holidays observed.
Democratic convention officials report substantial progress toward settling a Mississippi seating dispute that could strain the party's unity against Goldwater. Senate Democratic Whip Hubert Humphrey, amid White House talks, says a compromise may satisfy both the all white regular delegation and the Freedom Democratic faction, with seats as guests or regulars to be determined.
