Auditor Ewart Mitchell announced the 1964 65 total inside and outside tax rate at 3.02 dollars, only two cents above the prior year, despite an eight million eight hundred thousand five hundred sixty one dollar budget approved by the board. The final estimate reduces expected tax hikes from earlier fears of 35 to 50 cents, with reserves likely to be lower than anticipated. The 3.02 rate excludes a 0.26 junior college levy. funds allocate mainly to welfare and county general, roads, health, and contingency needs. Final salaries and benefits approach seven million dollars, with fixed assets added.

Ukiah Man 21st Hiway Fatal for '64
Jed L. Spencer 52 of Ukiah died at 4 a.m. when his car left Highway 101 at Largo Hill nose first, 20 feet down and 78 feet west. He was thrown from the auto, possibly after losing control or falling asleep. The 21st fatal on Mendocino County highways this year. Funeral plans pending at Zimmerman Mortuary.
