Fire destroys Ukiah home in arson blaze on Lake Mendocino Drive

A $70,000 Ukiah residence and $30,000 contents burned when a flammable liquid was poured inside the Otis Hart home and a match tossed at 9:30 p.m. A woman’s recorded message may aid the probe. Firefighters contained the two-alarm blaze near Ackerman Creek as state and local agencies secured the site for state fire marshal Larry Heselton. No injuries reported. two-alarm response included Ukiah and Division of Forestry units.

Petitions seek extension of freeway to Cloverdale

Al Barbero of Redwood Valley returned from Sacramento with petitions signed by 900 Mendocino and northern Sonoma County residents seeking to extend Highway 101 from Cloverdale to the end of the freeway south of Ukiah. The drive, led by Citizens’ Band, cites several deadly accidents and urges bypassing Cloverdale and building a four lane route to five miles north of Hopland to improve safety amid funding cuts and opposition to full freeway plans.

Lake County deputy sheriff union demands outside arbitrator

Lake County Deputy Sheriff's Association threatens outside arbitration and highway pickets if the board of supervisors does not appoint an outside arbitrator by Wednesday midnight. An informational picket around the Lakeport courthouse runs 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. through Wednesday as contract talks continue since June 1975.

Countdown begins for Redwood Empire Fair in Ukiah

The 1976 Redwood Empire Fair opens at 5 p.m. Thursday with a ribbon cutting and fair directors’ introductions. Miss Redwood Empire Fair Queen pageant features twelve Mendocino County contestants in the grandstand at 8 p.m. with prizes. Friday hosts Kids’ Day, carnival rides at reduced rates until 6 p.m., and two rodeo performances at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

Thunderstorm Sparks Small Fires in Mendocino County

A Sunday dawn thunderstorm in Mendocino County produced several small spot fires between Dos Rios and Covelo, all quickly extinguished by air tankers from Ukiah. Heavy rain reduced fire risk, with 18 inches recorded in Ukiah during the thundershower. forecasts predict a dry rest of the week.

Ukiah Center to Host Self-Defense Workshop for Women

The Ukiah Community Center will host a two session self-defense workshop for women on August 31. Sessions at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. will be held at 225 E Perkins St with instructor JoAnn Turnwall. The event follows police cautions amid recent rapes and comes after many calls to the center.

Passengers freed in hijacked Egyptair jet storm

Egyptian troops stormed the Luxor bound Egyptair Boeing 737 after seven hijackers threatened to blow up the plane. All passengers and crew unharmed. several hijackers injured, one in serious condition. Hijackers led by Libyan reportedly demanded release of five Arabs and fuel to fly to Libya.
