President Ford accepted his party’s nomination in Kansas City vowing a total will to win a great victory. He touted a sound nation on the march to economic recovery and better life, pledged to fight Congress, and praised the party unity after selecting Sen. Robert Dole as vice president.

Ukiah Council selects projects for federal public works funding

Ukiah city council picked drainage improvements Gibson Creek work an electrical substation and two fire stations as top priorities for a Public Works Act funding application. City Manager Jim Swayne said priorities reflect local unemployment and aim to spur jobs, with total ideas estimated around five million dollars though exact funding unclear. Additional items include sewer and water treatment upgrades storage tanks replacement city hall new corporation yard airport hangars sidewalk work and runway reconstruction.

MCEA members vote on new county contract

More than 600 Men docino County Employees Association members vote by mail on a new county contract after two rejected offers. Ballots mailed Wednesday will be tabulated Monday evening. Negotiations since March followed June 28 and July 27 rejections. Informational meetings were held in Ukiah and Fort Bragg. The initial proposal included a 2 percent cost of living hike and a $40 monthly increase for 1977-78.

Consumer prices rise at 6 percent rate in July

Washington reports the Labor Department figures showing a 0.5 percent monthly rise in the urban cost of living, keeping the annual rate at about 6 percent since April. Food costs eased to a 0.1 percent gain while medical, travel, and lodging services surged.

Teleprompter Cable faces FCC friction over county franchise

Mendocino County supervisors pressed Deputy District Attorney Richard Henderson to finish a countywide cable TV franchise and asked the FCC to delay an August 31 hearing on a cease and desist order. Teleprompter, operating since 1973 on a year to year basis, cannot continue without a certificate of compliance from the FCC, which hinges on granting the new ordinance. The board plans to propose the ordinance at the next meeting, while debates over provisions affecting translator systems and a missed rate hike linger.

The Lake County Employes Association wins again as the Appellate Court denies County Council Haughton’s appeal. Judge Shea’s ruling bars the 1976-77 budget until salary surveys align with comparable counties.
