A powerful earthquake and tidal waves struck Indonesia's eastern islands causing hundreds of deaths or missing. Official tallies show 72 dead and 81 missing in Bali Lombok and Sumbawa with fears the toll may rise as rescue teams proceed.
President Ferdinand Marcos announced a broad amnesty for those convicted of subversion and ordered release of all martial law prisoners not yet tried or under military tribunals. He spoke at the World Law Conference emphasizing human rights.
Pasadena based JPL reports Voyager 2 functioning well after a shaky Cape Canaveral lift off. Engineers say two of three launch problems are easing and the probe should need only a minor maneuver to align with Jupiter. The boom for cameras and instruments partial deployment is near full deployment.
Mendocino Transit Authority manager Jim Moshofsky warns that fare increases will reduce ridership, with midday and weekend trips most affected. The MTA board debates new service levels and potential price rises at a Sept. 19 meeting, while discussions include alternative revenue like advertising and charter programs. A 6-3 Aug. 15 vote extended service to mid 1978. Moshofsky resigns Oct. 15. The board composition shifts to non elected members, with four-city selection and county appointees. Ridership rose 17 percent June to July.
Dr. Eric W. Baer an Ukiah optometrist died after a pool accident at Deerwood Swim Tennis Club. He struck his head in the shallow end while diving following a sauna visit. He was pronounced dead at Ukiah General Hospital at 12 34 a m. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10 a m and he will be buried in Celina Ohio.
Patchy fog and low clouds along the coast continue tonight and Tuesday with mostly fair inland conditions. Temperatures range from mid to upper 80s inland with coastal highs around 55 to 64 and inland highs near 95. wetter by late week. rainfall totals unknown.
A Campbell man Raymond A. Cruz, 40, was fatally injured when a rifle discharged in a pickup while unloading near River Road in Mendocino County. The incident occurred Friday evening as David Frias, 18, unloaded a 30 30 rifle. Cruz died at Hillside Hospital and the area saw a weekend of violence including rapes and assaults.
Secretary of State Cyrus Vance met with China’s Huang Hua in Peking for high level discussions. The first day produced mostly U S policy review with no move on Taiwan or normalized relations despite mass demonstrations celebrating the 11th Communist Party congress. Huang’s toast skirted the Taiwan issue referencing the 1972 Shanghai communiques.
A coalition of conservative groups launches major advertising and mail campaigns opposing ratification of the Panama Canal agreement. Senator Jesse Helms pledges to filibuster when the treaty reaches a vote in the Senate. President Carter gains support from Gerald Ford and Henry Kissinger.
The Mendocino board of Supervisors will consider adopting an ordinance to ban street vending on public property after a August 9 hearing on the issue. Local merchants cited crowding and uncleanliness as problems and called for a strict law. The agenda includes budget figures, a zoning election request from the Potter Valley Citizens Advisory Committee, a transit authority agreement extension, and a traffic fine collection pact with Ukiah.
