Maryland Governor Marvin Mandel, 57, found guilty on federal mail fraud and racketeering charges. He faces possible prison time and is expected to be stripped of power on sentencing day, after admitting receiving gifts but denying bribery.
David Berkowitz known as the Son of Sam appeared in custody at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn for arraignment on two second degree murder counts in Queens. He was remanded to his cell pending a September 1 hearing while psychiatric tests continue.
The Mendocino board sent a proposed ban on street vendor sales on public property back to Assistant District Attorney Richard Henderson after opponents raised constitutional questions and human rights concerns. A Sept 13 report on constitutionality was ordered.
Patchy fog and low clouds along the coast increase tonight with otherwise fair conditions. Northward areas see increasing clouds and a chance of showers while Eureka northward experiences cooler inland by Wednesday with 54 to 62 at Fort Bragg and 57 to 68 at Ukiah.
