Willits firm Marcie, Baker and Truitt accepted for spreading about 12 000 cubic yards of base material on the Willits Fort Bragg road four miles west of Willits at 143 dollars per yard. Other bids were 148 and 170 dollars per yard. Work must start by August 27 and finish in 30 days.
Mt San Hedrin chapter No 32 of the Footprinters holds an important session Friday at 7 30 p m at the Maple cafe. Orley Vinson secretary reminds members dues are payable and that guests are permissible at the session.
Mendocino and Lake 4 H members earned prizes at the Petaluma Fair. Mike Nelson of Potter Valley 4 H won the Fourth District Fair 4 H swine showmanship trophy from Consolidated Milk. Jim Lusk of Scott’s Valley won the John’s Equipment and Supply trophy for best sheep project and the Aberdeen Angus fat steer class, while Ukiah Rustlers’ Lusk claimed additional honors. Colin Meyer of Potter Valley earned junior and senior calf prizes, and Larry Snow collected multiple 12th District awards for Jersey cattle. Novato’s Katherine Orr, Dairy Queen of the 1955 State Fair, and her Guernsey entries topped senior yearling classes at the Petaluma fair.
Lord Beaverbrook's Daily Express suggested Diana Dors and ex-husband may have staged a Hollywood pool plunge that led to a brawl. It questioned Miss Dors' claim that photographer Stewart Sawyer was pushed into the pool as she fell.
In San Francisco delegates prepare to renominate President Eisenhower and Vice President Nixon. Eisenhower arrives 6 to 6:30 p.m. PDT and supporters, optimistic after a health update, rally to boost the campaign.
SAN FRANCISCO UP The California delegation voted to cast its 70 votes at the Republican National Convention for Richard Nixon. Gov Goodwin Knight and his supporters abstained. Mary Tibbitts of Woodland said she would nominate Knight for vice president to push a wide open convention. Knight had not endorsed Nixon.
Excessive speed around bends wrecked three cars and injured one driver seriously during the weekend, with two accidents on Highway 128 near Yorkville and Philo. Daniel Belli of Healdsburg skidded near Fort Bragg, overturned his Chevrolet, minor injuries, mailboxes damaged. Archibald Rowland of Philo, 24, blinded by headlights, went off Highway 128 east of Yorkville, skinned and shaken but no doctor needed. Milton Moore of Mendocino, driving a Chevrolet, overturned on Highway 128 east of Philo, severe injuries, airer to Boonville. Patrolmen G. D. Brest and N. L. Stevens investigated.
Governor Goodwin J. Knight threw a high profile Republican gala for about 10,000 guests in a giant San Francisco venue. The event featured 15,000 carnations, champagne service, elaborate cuisine, and Hollywood celebrities while a few disturbances and a strict cut at 10 pm marked the night.
