More than 35,000 people attended the Redwood Empire Fair ending its four day run under perfect weather. Youthful 4-H and FFA exhibitors competed in the Rate of Gain contest sponsored by the 12th District Agricultural Association during the annual event.
Lakeport youth Craig Timothy John 16 DOA after a speeding small sedan driven by his half brother Mario Bartholomew Williams 19 eluded Lakeport police and Lake County deputies. The car rolled six times on Parallel Drive near Highway 29. John was thrown beneath the vehicle. Williams, in custody on suspected felony drunk driving and manslaughter charges, faces strict legal action as funeral plans are set. The report also covers a county fair auction with record prices for cattle and livestock.
A stubborn fire north of the Mill Creek reservoir near Ukiah grew to 620 acres by 8:30 am with 20 percent containment and over 300 personnel, 16 fire trucks, and eight bulldozers surrounding the burn. Ukiah air tankers dropped 21,000 gallons of retardant, assisted by PBMs from Hollister and Sonoma County. Evacuation advised for campers near Willow Creek and Mayacmas campgrounds. control expected by 8 pm as south wind gusts of 15 mph drive activity.
Charles Lewis Crawford Jr., 57, of Talmage, was listed in satisfactory condition at Hillside Community Hospital after his pickup veered off a forest service private road 17.8 miles north of Soda Creek Ranger Station and plunged about 200 feet into a canyon. He suffered a possible neck fracture, forearm puncture wound, and possible chemical burns to the right eye. The accident occurred around 4 p.m. Sunday, with deputies notified at 11:14 a.m. and a tow arranged from Holiday Harbor.
Two Willits boys aged 6 and 8 undergo rabies treatment at Howard Memorial Hospital after a skunk bit Chuck Butler while the animal sprayed him in the face. His younger brother Bill receives precautionary care. The head of the captured skunk was sent to Berkeley for rabies testing.
Secret Service and FBI investigated a possible conspiracy to kill President Nixon during a New Orleans visit. A motorcade was canceled just hours before Nixon flew from Key Biscayne to address the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Four former New Orleans police officers were ordered arrested and other suspects were surveilled as authorities pursued two or more alleged participants.
Baltimore report notes UPI that the U.S. attorney reviewing alleged contract kickbacks doubts government will meet again with Vice President Spiro T. Agnew. Time magazine cites a Justice Department official predicting indictment next month for Agnew including bribery and extortion.
Potter Valley 4-H Club dominated the awards list from the Redwood Empire Fairgrounds event at Grange Park. Winners include Leo Kaye for beef rate of gain, Jan Eddie for sheep, Joe Kaye for hogs, and multiple clean stall, showmanship, and breed trophies awarded to Potter Valley, Covelo, and Ukiah groups. Assemblyman Barry Keene spoke on fairs as educational and financially solid.
A Redding lad, James Robert Seley, five, sustained a ruptured spleen, kidney laceration, and leg fracture after a hit-run while riding a bicycle on Staheli Drive west of Bell Hill Road. He remained in intensive care at Hillside Community Hospital in good condition. Police sought a 1965 gray primer Pontiac or Chevrolet with light top. car left the scene westbound.
