Assessor’s computer glitch hides 158000 tax hole

Mendocino County records briefly showed 1,580,000 in assessed value before a misplacement of data switched Parcel 1 and Parcel 2 for Georgia Pacific plants in Ukiah. The error erased the main G P plant assessment but did not reduce totals. safeguards and audits would have caught the omission, and half the funds will still go to the Ukiah district and college while the rest support local governance for 1976-77.

Weekend rain no boon to county pear growers

Mendocino County pear growers and packers hope for clear skies to push temperatures toward 100 degrees to finish the season. Alex Thomas of Alex Thomas Packing Co says high humidity sped ripening, straining packing and grading. The Pear Growers Council pegs county tonnage possibly surpassing 50,542 tons in 1973. State processors set prices at 105 per ton for No 1 Bartletts, with other grades listed. rising costs mean no relief for consumers at retail.

Ford trails Reagan by about five votes with 1130 needed for nomination as Republicans open their 31st convention in Kansas City. Injured woman to rescue crash survivors in remote area

Debbie Reese crawled over rough terrain for 312 miles to summon help for her husband Jim Reese and fellow passenger Melody Pakrek after a light aircraft crashed in Whale Gulch near the Humboldt county line. Pilot Darrell Holcomb died. survivors were flown out as FAA investigators joined the scene.

Third murder trial opens in Ukiah for Gutierrez stabbing

The 29-year-old Healdsburg laborer Cruz Rodriguez Gutierrez goes on trial in Superior Court for the April stabbing death of Alfred Carl Hausauer 55, owner of Gold Star Security Patrol. Hausauer died after being stabbed at a Ukiah birthday party as he tried to stop serving alcohol to minors.
