Burglaries Hit Ukiah Stores Law Offices Temple

Four downtown break ins targeted cash and mementos in Ukiah with Ben Franklin store suffering the heaviest loss of 496 dollars from a safe in Coke Williams’s office. Law offices of Mayor Barry Wood and Judge-elect Jim Luther lost about 76 dollars plus coins. others included J.C. Penney and the Masonic Temple. Investigating details include entry through a Masonic Temple roof area, torn safes, scattered papers, and a gold pocket watch belonging to Luther. Police say no reports completed yet. no word on motive beyond cash.

Ukiah Chiropractor Thomas Standley Dies By Own Hand

Dr. Thomas Standley 53 a Ukiah chiropractor for 23 years apparently killed himself last night in his office at 461 N State Street. His body found about 11 p.m. by his son Mark after leaving home about 8 p.m. Despondent over ill health the only weapon a single barrel shotgun. Surviving wife Marilyn four children Mark Laurel Kent Standley and Ellie Deering his mother Mrs Cladys Thomason and sister Doris Squier. Services Monday 11 a.m. at Eversole Mortuary with Rev Del Kjervestad officiating. Inurnment Chapel of the Chimes Santa Rosa.

DA's office burglarized in Ukiah heist

Ukiah police report that District Attorney Duncan James' office was hit Thursday evening in a spate of burglaries on School Street. Public administrator funds totaling 142 dollars were stolen from a locked safe opened with a key. a secretary's cash and other desks were searched. Latent prints and heel prints were found near the courthouse entrance as investigators seek clues. Earlier burglaries victimized Mayor Barry Wood and Judge-elect James Luther, law partners. further details appear elsewhere.

Ford claims first-ballot win with 1135 delegates

Ford campaign chief James Baker released a state by state breakdown showing Ford leading with 1135 delegates on the first ballot, and Reagan at 1031 with 93 uncommitted. UPI counts Ford at 1122 and Reagan at 1037 with 100 uncommitted. Baker cited West Virginia as Ford’s heavy uncommitted base and noted 15 solid first-ballot votes promised by Maine.

Hays quits re election bid amid health and scandal

Rep. Wayne Hays of Ohio withdrew from the 1976 race citing health issues and harassment to his family. He had been removed as head of the House Administration Committee amid allegations tied to mistress Elizabeth Ray who earned 14 000 a year.

Three of San Quentin Six Found Guilty in Long Trial

In San Rafael California three of the San Quentin Six were convicted on first degree murder and assault charges while three were acquitted after the state’s longest jury trial. Judge Henry Broderick read the verdicts after 24 days of deliberations. The convicted were John L. Spain Hugo Pinell and David Johnson. The acquitted included Willie Tate Luis Talamantes and Fleeta Drumgo.

Explosion at refinery tower kills 12 in Chalmette
