Democrats Open 1956 Convention Led by Stevenson and Harriman

At the International Amphitheater the Democrats began the 1956 convention with Adlai Stevenson and Averell Harriman battling for delegates not yet decided. Truman signaled support for the nominee while hedging his efforts for Stevenson if chosen. Stevenson led Harriman in delegate totals as kickoff drew cheers in Chicago.

Fair Closes With New Records Set At Ukiah Fair

A record four day crowd estimated at over 15000 attended the Ukiah 12th District Fair closing late last night. The event featured births in livestock with two calves born, a premature sow birth, and a woman delivering en route to a hospital. Quality livestock, poultry, garden exhibits and economic displays drew praise from 4-H and participants.

12th District Fair Parade Brief 40 Minute Show

The 12th District Fair parade featured floats, mounted units and marching groups in a 40 minute display celebrating history and local sites. Ukiah Dolphins Swimming Club won the $100 top prize with a theme of old swimming holes and modern pools. The Soroptimist club with Our Indian Heritage earned $75, Camp Fire girls $50, and Lions club $25 for fourth place. Various individuals and groups earned recognition for mounts and costumes, with awards for best mounted pairs, families, cowgirls, junior riders, and mounted clubs.

First Insurance Payment Made on Fruit Shed Fire Loss

The Ukiah Fruit Growers packing shed fire led to an insurance payout of 200000 to Ernest Paull secretary manager and a 260000 check from American Insurance Company covering materials and equipment. Adjusters estimate stock loss at 27523.55 with building and stock insured at 141000. Fire leveled the shed last Friday around 5 30 p m near the pear packing season start. Fire Chief Al Bechtel noted welding sparks near the shed may have started the blaze.

Fort Bragg Girl Listed as Runaway

Brenda Howell an 11 year old Fort Bragg girl visiting a sister in Azusa was listed as a runaway. She had been missing for a week with 13 year old Don Baker of Azusa whom she met at a Sunday school class. Brenda is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Harry Howell of Fort Bragg. The children left last Monday on a bicycling trip and did not return.

Ukiah-Willits Forger Escapes At San Quentin

Melvin Frye 28 a San Quentin convict jailed for forgery since 1954 escaped from a prison work gang Sunday along with Le land E Rogers 26 a San Mateo County robber. They vanished during dormitory housing construction and were missed at 10 p m. The pair may have stowed away on a San Rafael Richmond ferry. Road blocks and ferry slips were searched without success. Frye had a prior long criminal record and was from Vallejo with ties to Ukiah Willits area residents.

Ukiah Colts Head to Western Regional Playoffs

Polio Vaccination Program Open to Under 19 and Pregnant Women

Mendocino County health office announces federal and county vaccines available to all persons 19 and under and pregnant women. Clinics at 880 North Bush Street offer monthly shots, with well baby conferences scheduled in Laytonville Willits Point Arena Boonville Bragg areas. No person already inoculated with any vaccine will receive polio vaccine at health department clinics.
