Westport Group Files Suit to Halt Grammar School Closure
A complaint filed in county court seeks to block the Fort Bragg Union Elementary School District from closing the Westport one room grammar school. The suit claims 16 residents represent 107 taxpayers and argues the district has funds to operate the school, which would serve about 320 pupils in grades one through four at a cost of roughly $8,000, while transporting students 22 miles if closed.

Josie Mathews Dies at 92 in Ukiah
Mrs. Josephine Rachael Mathews aged 92 died Monday at her Ukiah home 204 North Spring Street. Widow of J R Mathews who ran a Ukiah drug store, she had lived in California 80 years and in this community 62 years. Born May 24 1864 in Missouri her family moved to Covely before settling in Ukiah. Her son Ernest preceded her in death three years ago. Continued on page 8.

Ukiah Jumpers Dominate Tri-County Horse Show
Jumpers from Ukiah swept top honors at the Pri-County horse show held Saturday night with Shirley Shaul riding a Ukiah jumper to lead three Ukiah entries. Laura M. rode by Betty Kiefer took second, and Flocka ridden by Zoe Anderson and owned by Oscar Anderson placed third. Other Ukiah winners included Kokoma by Bruce Johnson and Humphrey family in trail and other events, while Willits and Healdsburg riders also earned places in various divisions. Sunday’s Open show drew record entries but Ukiah had no representation.

First Carlot Pear Shipment Rolling From Ukiah
The first carlot shipments of pears from Ukiah went out Tuesday of last week with two cars heading east. By Monday night 41 carloads were en route, about 740 tons of fruit. Lake county sheds are packing and three cars are rolling to market. Shipments from both counties are expected to rise steadily.

Blast crushes cafe in Utah. 15 dead and 30 injured
In Monticello Utah an explosion destroyed a crowded cafe killing fifteen and injuring more than thirty. The blast blamed on natural gas ripped through a newly connected line leaving a deep crater. Victims included two children and several tourists with several severely hurt transported to Colorado hospitals.
