Birthday in Hospital Room After Hunting Accident

Nashmead rancher Ben Simmerly, 46 or 47, was kicked by a saddle horse while loading a deer carcass near Woodman Creek. He rode to his jeep, then drove home and was taken to Howard Memorial Hospital in Willits for a fractured leg, arriving at 3 PM on his birthday.

Napa Fisherman's Body Identified

The body found washed ashore near Fort Bragg is identified as Walter John Vinop, a 50 year old Napa man who disappeared two weeks earlier when a fishing boat capsized at Pudding Creek. Dent al work by a Napa dentist confirmed the identity. The corpse was recovered yesterday near the old Fort Bragg dump, two miles from the incident site.

Laytonville Disorderly House Case Heads to Jail

Two Laytonville women arrested in a raid on the White House Lodge pleaded guilty to charges of keeping a disorderly house or soliciting drinks. Marie Minikel, 29, got two years probation with 30 days in jail. Madeline Blake, 37, received two years probation with 15 days in jail. Rose Martin, 30, received probation and 90 days in jail for prostitution. Sheriff Bartolomie said the operation continued about two weeks before the raid.

River landholders were told emergency repair of the flood damaged Russian River channel must be completed by November 1. Bids would be advertised August 15 with contracts awarded by August 30 if rights-of-entry are granted by August 31.

Attorney Falk to Attend GOP Caucus Luncheon Saturday

Ukiah attorney Harry W. Falk Jr will join San Francisco as an alternate GOP delegate to the Republican National Convention. He is invited to a no host caucus luncheon in the Sheraton Palace Hotel on Saturday August 18. The invitation is from Governor Knight and supported by Vice President Nixon and Senator Knowland.

The flood control district moves toward selling $650 000 Coyote Valley dam bonds. A board resolution calls for bond sale after August 20 with sale around September 10 to 19 and bond repayment through 1991. Ab Jenkins Dies After Heart Attack at 73

Ab Jenkins of Salt Lake City Utah veteran race driver died after a heart attack in Milwaukee Wisconsin. He was returning to his hotel after a Braves Cardinals doubleheader when the attack struck. Jenkins was slated to pace the Elkhart Lake stock car races and collapsed while en route to his Astor Hotel room with host George E. Rourke. He was pronounced dead at County Emergency Hospital.

Mrs Gordon Dixon obituary in Ukiah

Mrs Gordon Dixon of 705 West Mill street Ukiah died Friday morning at 5 o clock in Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital after extended illness. Funeral services by Eversole Mortuary are pending. She and husband Mr Dixon moved to Ukiah in 1950 from Laurel Mississippi where he worked for Masonite. Survived by son Charles Gordon Dixon Jr and father Charles S Buckland who has resided with the family here.

Hemorrhaging Valley Boy Treated After Tonsil Operation

Rodney Wright six year old son of Mr and Mrs Paul Norris of Redwood Valley was brought to the county hospital Thursday night for treatment after a hemorrhage. He had undergone removal of one tonsil a week earlier and bled freely so only one tonsil was removed. Mrs Norris said he had been improving since the operation. Mr Norris came home from work at the Masonite plant at 11 o clock Thursday.

Weekend of Horse Action at 12th District Fairgrounds

Horse race fans and equestrian enthusiasts converge on the fairgrounds for a packed weekend. Tomorrow features trotting and pacing events starting at 2 p.m. with flat races, while Sunday offers trotting races, an open horse show, and a five eighths mile flat finale. Notable entrants include Record Norse Back Al's Express from San Jose and Ukiah’s Prudie Point ec, owned by Jerry Duval. Police and officials promise no bookmaking. The Tri County horseshow opens tomorrow night at 7 45 p.m. in the arena.

Full Weekend of Events Aims to Lure District Fair Viewers

Opening night attendance at the 12th District Fair reached 2087, a gain of over 200 from last year and 800 from two years ago. The tally excludes exhibitor passes and children under 12. Fair manager F. Pierce Stipp and directors praised the turnout as crowds enjoyed exhibits, outdoor shows, and vaudeville through a warm evening.

Colt League All Stars Reach $899.84 in Fund Drive

Ukiah Daily Journal reports the Colt League All Stars have $899.84 saved toward their San Bernardino trip. Donations came in from Daniel Brothers, Foster Tire Service, Atkins Tractor Co, Greenfield & Jennings Tire Supply, and others. The team will host the Ukiah Merchants at Anton Stadium Sunday at 2 p.m. with a Knights of Columbus picnic to follow.

Belgium Coal Mine Disaster Leaves Hundreds Feared Dead

A loaded coal cart toppled at the Bitter Heart mine in Marcinelle Belgium triggering a fire and entombing hundreds as rescue efforts continued. Initial figures show at least 243 missing and 24 known dead with up to 254 feared entombed as flames cut power and access.

Ukiah man held on bad check warrant to Nevada

Henry Fred Yoder thirty three of Ukiah was arrested on a bad check warrant and is jailed awaiting transport to Nevada. Sheriff Reno Bartolomie said Yoder recently arrived from Ely Nevada and is sought there for issuing bad checks connected with a car purchase.
