Bids High Delay West Wing Courthouse Additions

Bids for the courthouse west wing courtroom addition exceeded estimates by about 53 percent with a low bid of 153 574 from Rothschield Raffin and Welrick of San Francisco. The board of supervisors deferred decision to next Wednesday at 2 30 p.m. to accept or reject bids and possibly re advertise to trim costs.

Ukiah Peace Officers to Fix Riverside Park Swimming Area

Ukiah police chief and spokesmen for the Ukiah Peace Officers Association say work to improve safety at Riverside Park swimming area will begin soon. Local business leaders and many residents offer time materials and money to fund markings ropes lifeguard tower and safety equipment after the area was ordered closed. The Ukiah Real Estate Association offers financial help to cover much of the costs.

Millview Water District public hearing set for September 4

At a committee meeting last night attorney John Golden announced tentative plans for a Millview County Water District north of Ukiah with petitions validated by the county clerk. The district would cover about five square miles from Ukiah north to the Forks, with a 10 percent voter threshold met by roughly 63 signatures out of about 160 gathered.

Floyd Lawrence Named Hospital Maintenance Superintendent

Floyd Lawrence, building inspector for the new county hospital, was appointed hospital maintenance superintendent by the board of supervisors yesterday. He was chosen from 18 applicants after interviews on Tuesday and will start at $436 a month, the second step in a five tier pay range from $415 to $505.

Mendocino County Proposes 1956 57 Budget Rise

The preliminary 1956-57 Mendocino county budget totals 5,473,101.43 dollars, up 445,963.86 from last year’s final expenditures. Final hearings begin August 20 and the tax rate will be set on the final budget. Last year’s rate was 2.47 dollars per 100 assessed valuation on about 71 million assessed value. this year’s valuation is projected near 73 million.

Journal Colt Fund Drive Reaches 848 84 Total

The Ukiah Journal reports the Colt League All-Star fund drive has reached 848.84 dollars with funds still needed. Donations included 10 dollars from Redwood Auto Supply as the paper seeks to cover expenses for the junior baseball program and to send the team to San Bernardino for the Western Section finals.

Fair Parade Set for Saturday August 11

The Twelfth District Fair parade will start from the Veterans Memorial Building at noon on Saturday August 11. Joe Hampton reports 347 participants and 12 floats. The route goes from the Memorial Building to State Street then north to Low Gap Road and disperses. traffic plans redirect northbound and southbound vehicles along Mill Dora Walnut Bush Low Gap and Redwood highways.

Ukiah City Council Passes Waterway and Pool Ordinances

The Ukiah council met in a formal session approving easement agreements for a southwest area waterline project and discussing a creek bed repair. A pool disinfectant test report was reviewed, storm drainage issues were addressed, and a purchasing ordinance was introduced.
