1956 12th District Fair Opens In Mendocino County Show Window

Voters learn the fair showcases Mendocino County's agricultural products livestock poultry and homemaking skills. The opening tomorrow is led by organizers including secretary-manager F P Stipp highlighting 4 H clubs Future Farmers of America and Future Homemakers of America programs.

Record Number of Entries Pours in For Fair Parade

Ukiah prepares for the 12th District Fair parade with over 350 participants and more than 60 entrants. Bands include Hamilton Air Force band, Navy Electronics unit band, and Maxwell Johnson band. Dignitaries, local officials, Paul Bunyan, and colorful floats from Ukiah and surrounding communities will march or ride through town.

Mendocino County Bonds Move Up Sale of Coyote Dam Bonds

Mendocino County moves the sale date of its Coyote Dam bonds up to October 1 as $850,000 bond issue funds a district share of Coyote Valley dam storage. Herb Cochrane states the $633,000 will be delivered to Sonoma County by December 15 to cover the first three years principal on Sonoma’s $5.65 million bonds.

Few Seats on Bus Open for Ukiah Rooters

There are 21 seats available on the bus taking the Ukiah Colts to the Western playoffs in San Bernardino. Seats cost 15 dollars round trip for parents and other supporters, with reservations via David Scudero between 5 and 8 p.m. by Monday 4 p.m. The bus departs Monday at 8 p.m. If Ukiah wins the Western finals, riders have first refusal on seats for the Evanston, Illinois trip at 85 dollars each.

Colombia Ammonition Blast Kill 237 in Sabotage Suspect

In Cali Colombia authorities reported a massive blast from seven army ammunition trucks that ripped a crater 70 yards wide and 40 to 50 feet deep. At least 237 dead with women and children among victims. officials vow punishment for those responsible. Brig. Gen. Alberto Gomez ordered an investigation as relief airlift began.

Sponsor Fair Booths For Organizations At 12th District Fair

Mr and Mrs Keith Yonce in charge of fair space said the list of sponsors for booths at the 12th District Fair grew this week with contributions from E A Eversole Borden's dairy delivery Ukiah Pine Lumber Triple S Camera and Mayflower Storage Company. Prospects were that additional sponsors would be added before the fair opened at 6 30 o clock Thursday evening.

India to attend 24 nation Suez conference in London

India announced it would attend the 24 nation Suez Canal conference in London and present a compromise plan to avert war in the Middle East. The move breaks a diplomatic logjam and suggests Soviet Union and possibly Egypt will send representatives. Greece urged postponement and suggested a venue other than London.

Ukiah High Board approves 1956 57 budget

The Ukiah Union High School board adopted a 64358 budget for the coming year after a brief public hearing. Superintendent W A Chessall presented the plan and the board authorized selling bonds for school improvements when market conditions allow. A new cafeteria project is part of the enhancements funded by the bonds. The board meets next Tuesday.

Three Laytonville women held on prostitution charges after motel raid

Early today in a Laytonville area raid on White House Lodge eight miles north of Laytonville on U S 101 three women were detained on prostitution related charges. Rose Martin 30 Madeline Blaire 37 and Marie Minikel 29 were booked for drunken in public and related offenses. Minikel's husband owner of the tavern faces charges of keeping a disorderly house and violations of the B girl law. ABC investigators will file license related charges and locals report the operation lasted about two weeks with deputies and ABC agents present in the raid and surrounding area. A Humboldt county case also cites a prior drunk driving fine against Rose Martin.
