Open Bids Set For Ukiah Penney Building August 14

Bids will open in Ukiah on Tuesday August 14 for construction of the J C Penney Company store at School and Church streets on the former Safeway site. Penney invites seven contractors including Ukiah’s Henry Mercer. A new Safeway building site on South State Street will be moved and redeveloped with four stores planned by Mr Hart.

Chamber Urges Revision of Ukiah Street and Road Plan

The Ukiah Chamber of Commerce urges the city council to obtain cost estimates from Hans Wise and Associates to revise the master street and highway plan. It wants an updated pattern for Ukiah development and a plan for orderly expansion of city limits. The board discussed name change votes, a new chamber radio show on KUKI, a $100 contribution to the 12th District Fair Parade, and a $500 appropriation for Christmas decorations.

New Department to Probe All Major Complaints of Vets

A new department within the VA Loan Guaranty Division will investigate major complaints from veterans with G I loans on their homes. For information contact Thomas J. Husband Held For Assaulting Wife

Lars Algot Nygren, a 63 year old woodsman, was arrested after sheriff's deputies found his wife Mrs. Nygren with severe head injuries from a bottle blow at the Nygren home near Hartstone Lodge on the Eel River above Potter Valley. Nygren eluded officers by fleeing to the woods before his arrest. Mrs. Nygren was taken to the county hospital for treatment.

Board approves survey completion and road widening funds

The Mendocino County board authorized finishing the Westport-Leggett Valley road survey between Union Landing and Hardy Creek and allocated 1956-57 federal aid funds for a widening project next summer. Surveyor Kempe Richardson said the survey would take about three months with an aerial survey already done. The work may move about 270 000 cubic yards of earth at an estimated cost of 135000 dollars. Bids are expected in early spring.

Stones Move to Santa Rosa After Home Sale

The Lewis Stones have settled in Santa Rosa after selling their Irvington Drive home. Mr. Stone has a good job there and plans to return to college for special studies with the aim of later entering the University of Chicago.

Lost Deer Hunter Found Safe on McCoy Ridge After Weekend Search

Mentink, a hunter from Davis, went missing Saturday afternoon while camping east of Covelo for deer season. Volunteers, a sheriff’s four wheel patrol and air squadron hunted the rugged Black Butte hills. he emerged at 6 30 pm Monday near the top of McCoy Ridge six miles southeast of his camp, unharmed.

Army Captain Nabbed With $11,800 Loot

Army Captain James P. Scilley, 32, arrested in Los Angeles on charges of stealing $11,800 in payroll from Fort Ord. FBI says he rented an apartment under an assumed name, had $642 on him and $2,220 in the apartment. He faces up to 10 years or $10,000 fine if convicted. Scilley commanded payroll division at Fort Ord and vanished with his bodyguard. tracks suggest another vehicle left. Scilley served in World War II and Korea earning the Silver Star and Bronze Star.

US Steel Raises Price to Cover Rising Costs

Pittsburgh report says United States Steel Corporation increased prices by about 8.50 dollars per ton to partially cover rising costs and a new three year contract with the United Steelworkers. The move affects roughly a third of national steel output and follows a five week strike by 650000 millworkers.

Public Defender Office Proves Effective Says Supervisor

Timothy W. O'Brien reported to the board that the new public defender office is working well with six assigned cases. Two defendants went to San Quentin, one placed on probation, two awaiting action, and one released on own recognizance. District Attorney Merle Orchard noted county savings of over $200 in reporter fees since the appointment and cited the $5,000 yearly part-time post created on Orchard's recommendation.
