A large blaze destroyed the Ukiah Fruit Growers packing plant on Talmage Road around 5 30 p m tearing the 102 by 195 foot shed to rubble The loss is estimated near 200 000 with insurance adjusters due Today and the plant readied to handle the pear crop this season leaving the facility and packing materials ruined.

Reports on the opening season show deer kills near average in total but small in size. Lake and Mendocino counties record few large deer. 36 tags in Lakeport and 41 at Cow Mountains indicate mostly small carcasses. California sales tax receipts rise amid activity surge

The state board of equalization reports a substantial increase in California business activity in the last quarter, despite slower auto sales. Taxable sales totaled 4,397,528,000, up 12.7 percent from 1955’s first-quarter level, with Mendocino County at 1,714,000 and total sales taxes for nine months reaching 420,337,506. The board projects 575,000,000 for 1955-56.

Supervisors and Ukiah Council Set Evening Meeting on Sewer Project

Mendocino County Board of Supervisors will meet Ukiah City Council at 7:30 p.m. in the Court House to discuss a costly sewer plant and lateral construction in the Ukiah sanitation district. Estimates rise from 1,000,200 to about 1,555,400, with an 18 percent increase from material costs and sight changes. The city sees no bond issue rise, but the county may need another bond issue due to lack of sewer assessment reserves.

Mendocino county Republican Central Committee members traveled to Sacramento to attend the state GOP convention. The group unanimously backed Ike Nixon’s ticket at the national convention in San Francisco this month. Walter Sandelin carried State Senator James Busch's proxy. Busch is in New York. Delegates from Willits included Blanche Iles and Barbara Hamilton, with C. N. McKelvey of Fort Brage also among the delegates.

Missing hunter sought after vanishing near Black Butte

Hearing on UHS Budget Tomorrow

A public hearing on the Ukiah Union High School district budget will be held tomorrow night at 8 o clock in the district library. Parents and citizens may question or protest the proposed 643 578 budget submitted by Superintendent W A Chessall, with funds allocated for new buildings under a recently passed bond issue.

California Republicans back Nixon for Eisenhower ticket

The California State Central Committee unanimously approved a resolution praising Eisenhower and Nixon and urging renomination. Delegates urged all 70 California delegates to back Ike and Nixon at the National Convention, with Gov Goodwin J Knight the only major holdout among Stassen supporters. Knight praised Herter and said he would support the nominee chosen by the President and Convention.
