Senator Clair Engle Laid To Rest In Red Bluff

Sen Clair Engle buried in Red Bluff near his hometown after a cortege from Tehama County Courthouse. Mourners include Gov Edmund Brown Sen Kuchel Pierre Salinger and Washington delegation. Services at graveside due to size. Engle died in Washington at 52 after brain tumor illness. He served 15 years in the House and 6 in the Senate and planned retirement this term.

Nine French Miners Rescued After Eight Days Underground

Rescue crews broke through to nine miners trapped 260 feet below the Mount Revel mine in Champagne, France. Andre Jacques, 23, first to surface, later followed by Michel Jacques, 29, both in good condition. Five others remain unaccounted for as rescue continued.

Senate panel backs two year delay in reapportionment

Washington (UPI) Senate Judiciary Committee approved a bill by Senator Everett Dirksen to delay reapportionment of state legislatures for at least two years. The measure, 10-2, would allow citizens to seek federal court delays until legislatures meet two regular sessions, potentially stretching to four years. Kennedy endorsed a bail reform bill, arguing the current system hurts the poor unable to post bail.

93 Day Jail Term For Errant Driver

Leonard Patrick Larry, 48, of Tacoma Washington, received 93 days in the county jail with five days mandatory and the rest due to fines totaling 442 dollars after appearing in Ukiah Justice Court. Larry was arrested by the California Highway Patrol in Cummings and charged with drunk driving, driving on the wrong side of the road, and not having a valid driver's license.

Mexican finds red boxes not for mail at Per kins and Orchard

A Mexican farm hand mistook a fire alarm box for a mail box at 6:38 this morning in Ukiah. Police and two fire trucks responded. he was briefed on the difference and released. He said fire alarm boxes resemble mail boxes in his homeland.

180th American Killed in Viet Nam War

In Saigon area a U S Army enlisted man was shot and killed in a Communist ambush 50 miles north of Saigon. He was the 180th American killed in action in Viet Nam. Four Vietnamese soldiers in a jeep with the American also died. The five were killed when Viet Cong guerrillas fired on their jeep as they headed home from a work morning with villagers clearing land for crops.
