Red Viets Attack U S Ship Near Tonkin Coast

President Johnson ordered shoot to kill rules for Navy patrols in international waters off North Vietnam after the Maddox was fired on. A second destroyer and air cover were sent to the area to attack any attacking force, with goals to drive off and destroy threats. The Maddox was not damaged. North Vietnamese patrol boats fired torpedoes and small guns as U S fighters and the carrier Ticonderoga delivered firepower.

Fatal Fort Bragg Crash Kills Lloyd Atkinson

Fort Bragg resident Lloyd Carl Atkinson, 30, died when the car he rode as a passenger left Highway 20 near Chamberlain Creek and struck a tree at 10 30 last night. Driver Cynthia Arudio, 21, was injured. she said Atkinson woke and grabbed the wheel, sending the car off the roadway. Also noted were other weekend crashes in Lake and Mendocino counties with one Saratoga woman killed in a Clear Lake Park crash.

Two Errant Drivers Receive Jail Terms

Louis J. Hoaglin age 19 of Laytonville was sentenced to five days in county jail after appearing in Little Lake Justice Court on Friday. Vernon Bruce Langley age 28 of Windsor received the same five day jail term in Ten Mile Justice Court for drunk driving.

Man Struck by Express Train Near Penistone

Standley Lovell, 60, escaped with minor cuts and bruises after being struck by a 60 mile per hour express train near Penistone England. Lovell said he tried to jump clear of the track when hit.

Airman Dies When Boat Hits Skiff on Lake Pillsbury

Allen George Telgloff, 21, of Mill Valley, an airman second class, is missing and presumed drowned after a small aluminum skiff was struck by a speedboat towing a skier near Rocky Point. His wife Irene Tetgloff, 21, was hospitalized with injuries. a 14 year old San Carlos boy piloting the speedboat was released to parents. Diane Rector, 11, from San Francisco, was hurt. divers searched 70 to 80 foot depths without success.

Girl’s corrugated box boat sinks on first test

Holly Harlan attempted a waterproof box-board boat for a San Francisco Art Institute assignment. The craft floated briefly then promptly capsized during its initial test on Sunday, leaving the designer soaked but credited for completing the task.

Frontier Bank in Covelo Closes Doors

Wells Fargo opened a Covelo branch on an emergency basis after Frontier Bank failed and entered voluntary liquidation Friday. State Superintendent John A. O Kane announced the state seized assets, with FDIC named as receiver. Deposits are expected to be paid under FDIC insurance. Frontier Bank president Robert Keith resigned effective the first of the month.

UPI reports Sen. Thomas Kuchel of California calls the Republican National Convention appalling and a tragedy. Burglars Loot Radios From Philco Distributors Plant

In Shreveport Louisiana burglars broke into Philco Distributors Inc and stole 1800 dollars worth of radios from 102 units. A note reading Tank you was left at the scene.

In Sacramento California Republicans retained control of the California Republican Central Committee despite a Goldwater backed revolt.
