Friends press for state reply on Mendocino College improprieties

Friends of the Community College urge Mendocino College trustees to discuss the state response to Superintendent Pete DeVries charges over the Mendocino State Hospital sale to Vinifera Associates. The DGS letter from Paul Savona alleges the state secured its interest via a $2,000,000 farm-improvement condition and confirms Vinifera holds title with net proceeds paid to the state until a $725,000 note is settled.

Helms curses reporter during Rockefeller Commission appearance

Jury seated in murder trial of Mark Bernard in Ukiah

A seven woman five man jury was seated for the trial of Mark Franklin Bernard accused of strangling Audrie Avery in a Ukiah motel room on Jan 30. The trial began with opening arguments after jurors were questioned about opinions on religion and personal issues.

Hostage siege ends as gunman frees consulate captives

In Johannesburg a former Israeli security agent, David Protter, surrendered to police after holding 21 hostages for about 16 hours at the Israeli Consulate. Police say he fired on bystanders, threatened to blow up the building, and demanded flight to Israel for himself and hostages. Eight hostages, including three children, were released during the siege.
