Steel profits climb as auto industry falters in recession

Communist Forces Seize Saigon and Renaming Ho Chi Minh City

Viet Cong and North Vietnamese troops capture Saigon ending a 35 year war. They raise a Viet Cong flag at the presidential palace and declare Ho Chi Minh City the new capital as U.S. evacuation ends. Reports cite scattered fighting and widespread jubilation in Hanoi and Saigon.

Ford proud he ordered Vietnamese evacuation

President Ford defended the Saigon evacuation saying he was proud to move thousands of South Vietnamese to safety before the fall. Press Secretary Ron Nessen cited about 7,000 evacuees, 6,000 Vietnamese and 1,000 Americans, and Ford pushed Congress for a 327 million dollar aid bill to reimburse foreign aid projects and aid remaining refugees.

Bernard Avery murder trial details reveal drinking and violence

Prosecutors presented testimony from Ukiah detectives and others on a tape in which Mark Bernard admitted beating Audrie Avery to cause bleeding on multiple occasions before her Jan. 30 death. The defense argued Bernard’s mental state and sought to distinguish guilt levels while noting alcohol and benzedrine use and a pattern of goading violence.
