Portugal Left Democrats threaten coalition after election setback

In Lisbon the Popular Democrats demand the Communists be removed and a new coalition formed as they threaten to quit the caretaker government. Mario Soares pledges a minority government if elected, while Socialists fall short of a majority with 35 percent of the vote. California coastal initiative extends signature deadline

The California Coordinating Council extends the signature drive to May 15 for Prop 20, waiving 30 day validation if random sampling fails. In Mendocino County, chair John Paulson says about eight percent of registered voters have signed. He urges signing with name as registered, full address, and notes a toll free northern coast line for questions. A total of 312,404 valid signatures are needed to place the measure on the November ballot, which would repeal the Coastal Act, dissolve the Coastal Commissions, and shift control to local governments.

Security chief dies from wound in Ukiah stabbing

Alfred C. Hausauer 55 owner of Gold Star Patrol and Lindsay Water Conditioning Co. died at a Ukiah hospital after being stabbed Sunday night at a private birthday party dance. Cruz Rodriguez Gutierrez 29 was arrested for attempted murder and held in county jail as investigators treat the case as homicide pending autopsy. Hausauer is the town's second homicide victim of 1976 and sixth in the county this year.
