Glass pitting nicknamed Glasspox spreads from Washington to many states and Canada. Windshields are affected but rear and side panes remain clear. Officials blame hydrogen bomb tests, smog, vandals, or mass hysteria as cars of all ages show pits. Police cars and Cadillacs report damage.
Reports of mysterious windshield pittings surge with theories on causes. A Canadian scientist links pits to dust from a meteor while police and scientists debate mass hysteria. Others cite dust storms industrial ash or smog and an atomic scientist rules out H bomb radiation. Damage began weeks ago in Washington state.
In Eureka, a 21 year old housewife Myra Yendes remained in critical condition after a late Sunday crash that killed her 29 year old husband Donald Peter Yendes. The accident occurred when his car struck the rear of a truck on the Broadway approach to downtown Eureka. The truck driver Chester Wallace was uninjured. All three residents of Eureka.
The County Board of Supervisors approved preliminary designs for a new 80 bed county hospital to be built on the current site. Silvio Marraccini presented a model for a Stone & Mulloy designed facility with Dr. Roy Swain endorsing the plan. Construction is set to start this fall with occupancy hoped for in 1956. Total costs are projected around $1,119,122 with $466,000 already secured. Hill Burton funds are pending. The hospital will include 40 general and 40 tubercular beds, while the Juvenile hall will become a home for the aged with a new hall planned on a 128 acre site. Courtroom improvements were discussed as the courthouse inspection request moved forward with the state.
MODESTO California. Charles F Vernon 36 Bakersfield was held on a charge of murdering his three month old daughter Charlene last October in Bakersfield. Vernon was arrested after a murder warrant was issued by Kern County district attorney's office.
Sports brief reports Pittsburgh and New York baseball scores with detailed line scores and an updated Dow Jones stock average. Sacramento Governor Goodwin J. Knight signs a bill authorizing Napa State Farm sale with a minimum sale price set at 9 percent of appraised value. Also noted are a fatal crash near Maxwell, US 99 W, and public works bids for drainage on US 101 in Ukiah and bid for County Road 980 grading and sealing with a $201,000 budget.
Washington Army prosecutors opened the court martial of Corporal Edward S. Dickenson, a former Korea prisoner, by offering a transcript of a Communist propaganda broadcast to prove he was an informer and collaborator. The defense opposed the evidence, citing lack of proof of broadcast participation. The trial adjourned after the first day as prosecutors planned to call fellow prisoners and seek voice verification in later sessions. Dickenson, from Crackers Neck Virginia, is one of two Americans who initially refused repatriation, then changed his mind, and has been held in a private hospital ward at Fort Belvoir since January.
The City Planning Commission moved to study rezoning South Dora Street from Mill to the city limits to R-2 to permit duplexes and rental units. Realtors Cochran and Fullerton urged the change on both city sides near Pomolita school while a new hospital site outside city limits was disclosed. The panel also approved Ukiah General Hospital’s $125000 wing addition with two surgery rooms and a nursery.

Christian de Castries reorganized the garrison, drawing troops into a rough circle of five positions for a last stand. Some 11,000 French Union soldiers rely on carefully aimed parachute drops for supplies while over 40,600 Communist rebels push along bombed roads from the Red Chinese frontier.
A B- a C-119 Air Force transport with seven crewmen crashed and burned in fog on Mission Peak north of Granada Hills while attempting to reach Burbank field. The aircraft, en route from Williams AFB Chandler, Arizona, vanished after striking a 2500 foot mountain. Victims' names withheld pending next of kin notification.
Ottawa reports External Affairs Minister Lester Pearson, whose department issues passports, was delayed yesterday at the airport en route to the Geneva Conference after forgetting his own passport.
Senate investigators heard FHA head Albert M. Cole say administrative laxity prompted Guy T. O. Hollyday’s firing after he praised a high FHA official who resigned amid an FBI probe. Senator McCarthy charged Army officials and Assistant Defense Secretary H Struve Hensel with coordinating against the subcommittee. He claimed Hensel steered the Army report to hinder probes into misconduct and possible law violations tied to Hensel and a ship supply firm partnership.
Jay Stafford a 48 year old truck driver from San Francisco died heroically when his out of control 20 ton rig veered down a Belmont hill at 60 mph. He steered away from an intersection filled with pedestrians and collided with a tree and fence before the truck exploded. Police said his body was so severely burned it could not be identified.
Northern California stays fair through Wednesday with coast fog south of San Francisco. Northeasterly winds 20 to 35 mph from Fort Bragg northward, lighter elsewhere 12 to 25 mph. Bay Area towns show high temps around 68 to 78 and lows near 47 to 53 with light afternoon west winds.
Australia granted asylum to Valdimir Petrov's wife after guards tried to force her back to Moscow. Prime Minister Menzies announced freedom after police overpowered and disarmed the escorts at Darwin Airport in a dramatic clash. Mrs Petrov, believing her husband dead, had phoned him to confirm he was alive.
