California unemployment rose from 7.8 to 8 percent in March as job gains in February were offset by 5,000 more jobseekers. The Brown administration reported 836,000 Californians out of work while 70,200 more workers held jobs in February than in March.
UPI reports record floods in six southeastern states leave at least 15 dead and over 23 000 displaced. Severe emergencies strike valleys as waters surge through towns and homes in a widening disaster.
The board of supervisors sets priorities for a rehabilitation center modification to house social services, a courthouse annex second floor in Ukiah, and a maximum security wing at the rehab center. Other top items include a coastal county center and Low Gap Road garage, plus storage expansion.
President Carter signed a government reorganization authorization to start a broad review of the federal bureaucracy. The action authorizes transfer consolidation or abolition of agencies with a 60 day veto by Congress. early recommendations for the Executive Office would reach Carter by early June.
Ukiah Lions dedicate this year’s Easter egg hunt to the memory of Dan Cohen. The event starts at 2 p.m. Sunday near Anton Stadium instead of city park. Co chairs are Bob Sandelin and Bill Dolan. Volunteers hide 8 000 candy eggs across six areas with 10 prize eggs for each age group for children ages 1 to 7. Participants are divided into age brackets from one to seven years old. Hunters head to the Anton Stadium south parking lot for area directions.
An audit by Coates Herfarth England finds San Francisco firm reports the county underpaid the retirement fund by 478 943 since 1973 and would owe 530 085 with 6 percent interest. repayment options over five to fifteen years are proposed to avoid higher taxes.
County supervisors approve a tentative 26 project slate funded by CETA Title VI with 70 percent for outside agencies. Seventy percent will go to non county programs and eight county projects are ranked for funding with a final list awaiting state allocation for 1977 78.
HUD demands halt on housing rehabilitation by Mendocino County CDC while reviewers flag lack of policy to select projects, missing job estimates, and erratic purchasing. CDC chair Hammond says moratorium already in effect, with no new starts until current work finishes and guidelines adopted. HUD permits health and safety exceptions.
