County Almshouse Burned After Severe Fire Disaster
The Blair county almshouse and its outbuildings were destroyed by a blaze caused by a fire in a flue. Inmates were away at work in nearby fields. Mrs. Young, wife of the steward, helped evacuate the infirm and crippled, while a demented resident, Nettie Yingling, perished in the flames after being led outside. Rescue attempts continued as authorities moved the remaining inmates to Hollidaysburg for temporary lodging. The total loss was $60,000 with $18,000 insured.
