The Supreme Court unanimously ruled the federal government may protect wild horses and burros on federal grazing lands from slaughter, reversing a New Mexico Livestock Board challenge and upholding the 1971 Wild Free Roaming Horses and Burros Act. Police blamed for inaction during Dan Ryan flood attacks

Chicago police faced criticism as flooding on the Dan Ryan Expressway led to violent attacks on cars. Cook County State's Attorney Bernard Carey opened a grand jury probe into racial violence in Chicago including Sunday night assaults and nearby Marquette Park unrest. Several motorists were injured and one woman killed by gunfire as attackers used guns bricks and clubs after cars were diverted by flood waters. John Gaspar questioned where the police were during the four hours on the flooded expressway and in a South Side neighborhood, noting many drivers expected protection. Police sources said such violence, while elevated for Chicago, has occurred during severe weather in the South Side. Gaspar argued more assaults occurred than police reports showed.
