Over 10 000 spectators watched 12 year old Robert Heald win the Scottsdale era derby champion title in Tucson. He defeated Vaile in the finals with a 32.5 second time as classmates and sponsors celebrated in 1955.
A spate of wrecks on Nogales highway and an autotrain collision left several people hurt. 16-year-old Philip Jose of San Miguel in critical condition after a pickup rollover north of Nogales. 18-year-old Raphael Murrietta in fair condition. 19-year-old Lawrence Moreno released after minor injuries. A second crash north of Nogales injured 20-year-old Richard Valdez, with a broken leg and concussion, and he faced reckless driving charges. Tonnie McCutcheon, 62, in fair condition from the autotrain crash on E 22nd Street. driver Edward Nobles cited for traffic violations.
Robert Heald won the Tucson championship as 51 Hughes sponsored cars started heats at Derby Downs to decide the company champion. The winner will represent the Tucson plant in Culver City, Calif., for a $300 prize pool and an all expenses paid trip, with Jimmy Pickett aiming to reach the California race again.
Western Mississippi records reveal Clifton Rose, a reclusive investor, left a vast estate of personal effects after dying at 62 on February 21. His belongings include a 1923 Cadillac, silver flasks, paintings, books, crystal, linen, antique furniture, and bronze clocks. He waived examination and was committed to Dutchess County jail pending grand jury action after allegedly breaking into a doctor’s office and a beauty salon with police noting only a roll of bandages missing.
