Tonight a new champion will be crowned in the Tucson Soap Box Derby with 131 heat winners from Derby Downs advancing. Prizes total 1500 dollars and the winner earns an all expense paid trip to Akron to compete in the All-American Derby for scholarships totaling 15000 dollars as about 15000 spectators watched the 975 foot course.

Gmelin 22 New Rochelle New York and civilian instructor George W. Jones 40 Tucson were killed. Investigators said an engine explosion is possible and the wreckage indicates a hard impact. Jones a veteran test pilot is survived by his wife and infant son. The cause may remain a mystery.
President Eisenhower closed the nationwide Operation Alert by urging quick passage of the armed forces reserve bill stalled in Congress. Speaking from the Pentagon in a closed circuit broadcast, he warned cities would be on the front lines in a attack and that a home based reserve battalion could outweigh distant active divisions. The bill faltered over a National Guard desegregation amendment.

Washington reports Russia declared three U S Army attaches persona non grata at the Moscow embassy for alleged improper activities. Lt Col John Benson Capt William Stroud and Capt Walter Mule had served 10, 15 and since Mar 24 1953 respectively, with no word yet on their departure.
Amphitheater Public School Board kept a budget line for a new car for Marion Donaldson, the superintendent, despite his protest that his current car was sufficient. The board argued a new car matched the job and warranted. The item remains in the budget.
In the American League, Cleveland 5 Boston 0 after a slow start, with Boston homers by Klaus. Wynn and Hegan pitched for Cleveland, while Kiely allowed eight runs. In the National League, Philadelphia defeated Chicago 2 0 with Baker hitting a sixth inning homer for Chicago. Simmons and Lopata drove in runs.
Tonight at 7:30 Derby Downs on Country Club Road hosts soap box finals open to the public. Also at 7:30 Audubon Society screens Disney Water Birds in Room 111 at the VA building. Other events include baseball at Hi Corbett Field and a Carnegie Library Bookmobile stop at Speedway Washwell.
