House Blocks Foreign Aid
Washington June 16 The house refused to accept the senate foreign aid fund of 6 125 710 228 and sent the issue to a nine member conference committee headed by Rep Taber to work out a compromise. Sen Bridges heads the senate conferees as chair of the appropriations committee. Taber led the house fight to slash aid and denounced senate amendments as arbitrary action while attacking newspapers and columnists who backed the senate plan. The measure would restore aid on a 12 month basis, boosting the house total by 145 million but still short of the president’s request.
