Airline fleets may hold military role in crisis
CHICAGO AP UPI reports that if the United States again uses force abroad, troops and equipment could be airlifted in commercial jumbo jets under Civil Reserve Air Fleet plans. A second approach envisions wide-bodied jets as aerial tankers to replace land-based refueling, potentially using DC10s or 747s. Secretary of the Air Force Thomas Reed notes such tankers would enable in-air refueling, reducing need to land for fuel.
