Grocery tax challenge filed by state
The state sues over grocery taxes arguing that if stores split foods and nonfoods for separate rates, shoppers will still bear the cost at checkout. Al Felix of the Retail Grocers Association cites added workload and costs, noting past attempts to apply a 4.8 percent rate. Prosecutors previously considered the 4.8 percent rate but were warned that sales taxes are levied on retailers, not customers, with collected funds due to governments.
