A jealous wife shoots and kills a young woman she believed was courting her husband. The incident occurred after an attempted whipping failed to deter the rival, with authorities investigating the fatal confrontation.
In Bloomington Newfoundland, Daisy Carlton a 20 year old waitress shot and killed Mrs. Joseph Leslie after a jealous attack with a horsewhip. Carlton surrendered to police and described the attack and location of the body. Leslie had stalked Carlton for over a year amid threats and marital strife.
Miss Carlton walked to the police station and gave herself up after a shooting that caused Mrs. Leslie to bleed to death in minutes. Her companion corroborated the account, but she would not discuss the events leading up to the incident.
In Yuma Arizona on September 12 the Republican county primaries produced a decisive showing for the Meeden faction led by C V Meeden. The mass meeting ticket was eclipsed by the Meeden slate, with P T Robertson joining the winning lineup, while several delegates were elected. Democratic primaries were scheduled for tomorrow with key contests anticipated in the important Yuma precinct.
Beaumont Texas September 13. A acre of Spindle Top Heights is a seething fire with heavy smoke. Wind from the northeast keeps the blaze in check. Thirty five derricks razed in Kerth-Wa tract. A 37500 barrel Higgins tank burns while oil is drawn from bottom to starve the fire. Flora and Wood wells aflame. Loss placed at over a quarter million. Heavy losers include Higgins Oil Keith Ward Becky Sharp and Texas Flora. B S Cullinan leads 500 workers with steam boilers and support.
Ensign Charles Morgan appeals to the Navy Department for a naval court trial, alleging a Navy Department clique blocks his promotion from gunner to commissioned officer. He cites derogatory charges by a peer soon to wed a high‑ranking officer’s daughter and accuses colleagues of attempting to retire him. Morgan, once a diver at the Maine wreck, seeks investigation and advancement.
In Elwood Indiana surgeons removing a stomach tumor from 37 year old Mrs Susan A Spaulding found encysted items in the organ a chewed sugar cane stalk ball of chewed thread seven inch shoestring with a knot a bird egg sized mass and other debris. The patient mother of four has suffered cancer of the stomach for fifteen years and may have swallowed the cane juice as a child leading to the unusual foreign bodies.
In Evansville on September 13 a group of fifty Blankenberg school pupils refused to attend. Parents appeared before the school board demanding that Mabel Smith a 10 year old girl be kept from school claiming she has mixed race ancestry and should be sent to a negro school.
A high level conference in Harrisburg between Governor Stone and United Mine Workers President Mitchell concluded at 4:30 this morning. Participants included State Senator William Flynn and M. E. Mel Mullin of Pittsburg, Colonel W. H. Richardson and District Presidents Nichols Scranton Duffy McAdoo and Fahey Shamokin. Stone issued a statement that differences were discussed with good will. details remain undisclosed.
In Cleveland Ohio on September 13 Clinton Edwin Quelos is noted as possibly the littlest baby in the United States. Named Lucky Seven by his mother he is the seventh child born in July and weighs just sixteen ounces at birth weighing eighteen ounces now and is reported perfectly healthy.
Secretary Shaw announced plans to release about 4,000,000 in treasury holding free or pledged bonds and to anticipate roughly 1,200,000 in October interest. He sees no cause for alarm and notes no evidence of a currency famine now or in prospect.
A Santa Fe passenger train, the so called newspaper train, colliding with a freight train near Struby south of Littleton caused multiple deaths and serious injuries. The freight train parted while ascending a grade, sending fifteen cars down the slope into the passenger train in a disastrous wreck.
