A man described as grazed argued and fought violently near a high ledge, climbing five stories to confront another in a dangerous confrontation. Police responded as bystanders watched. The incident left injuries and prompted a rapid response from local authorities.
A dramatic five story battle on Locust Street between contractor J Little and sub-contrator Ballantyne drew 300 Mercy Hospital patients and a thousand children as bricks rained on houses and a hospital window. Ballantyne, intoxicated and insane, was subdued by police after a brutal struggle. Little left with head injuries. Ballantyne remained unconscious in custody and may not recover.
Washington DC, Nov 7. The Secretary of the Treasury has discontinued acceptance of state and municipal bonds as security for public deposits. The amount of such bonds deposited is 17 million dollars.
Recorder Carroll D. Wright reported a telegram stating that a majority of individual operators in the Lackawanna coal regions will become parties before the coal strike commission and accept its decision.
LOOMINGTON Ill Nov 7 The proposed strike on the Chicago Alton road will not be declared. At a conference this morning between the officials and the employes a satisfactory adjustment was made. The machinists will get 30 cents an hour and other employes a proportionate advance.
Five masked men blew open the Cloverton post office safe ten miles east of Terre Haute last night. They secured several hundred dollars in stamps and cash and tied a passing pedestrian named Robert Gabbert to a chair before fleeing.
In the next ten days the federal government may intervene as California authorities refuse to acknowledge plague in the state. Surgeon General Wyman may receive instructions to regulate entry of vessels from Asiatic ports. federal quarantine officers could take charge if California persists in denial. Deaths rise August through October while state officials and newspapers suppress the crisis.
Prof Oscar L Trigg of the University of Chicago proposes a school for ambitious novelists with departments in poetry prose criticism journalism and publication. Instructors would teach plot love scenes historical fencing and publication, and initial works would be discarded as apprentice efforts to improve literature.
Mrs Emma Welsh of Fort Gibson smashed a gambling house with an axe after climbing to a roof and entering through a second story window. She demolished furniture while gamblers fled. she says officers refused to stop gambling and she aimed to rob her husband of the habit. Clara E. White of Denver sues the Stratton estate alleging a promised $2,000 loan for her book The Romance of the Red Star. She says Stratton gave $50 and four copies, with plans for the remaining funds, but illness and guardians prevented fulfillment.
