In St. Louis on January 29 Prosecutor Johnson issued a warrant for Dr. Alex Murray a dentist accused of threatening Leo Porter 10 over $9. Murray allegedly pulled a tooth portion leaving the root exposed after a dispute about payment.
Professor James W. Thompson of the University of Chicago arraigned churches and colleges as tax dodgers, claiming they offer opportunities to evade taxes much as medieval churches did. He argued rich donors divert property to religious institutions to escape taxation and gain unpublicized compensation amidst church corruption.
Mrs Bula Abbey wife of a young Sparta Tennessee merchant died after she raged over religion and in a Bible reading found the phrase If thine eye offend thee pluck it out She then plucked out one eye bleeding severely and died that night with her husband awakened by the act The incident occurred in Nashville dated January 29.
Washington January 29 Governor Murphy of Arizona met with the President after receiving copies of charges from Ives. He told Secretary Hitchcock the contingent fund dispute had reemerged and later discussions suggested the Ives allegations referred to the Arizona fund. The President, unaware of timing, appeared to assume federal funds were involved.
Admiral Schley attended a public reception at the Board of Trade in Louisville on January 29. He stood with Marion FE Taylor as crowds passed, offering courteous greetings, then joined a luncheon at Le Pendennis Club hosted by Mr Taylor and an afternoon reception hosted by Mrs Taylor.
A severe sleet and rain storm hit the Ohio Valley delaying trains and crippling telegraph service in Kentucky. In Louisville, trains ran one to two hours late, with heavy damage to fruit and shade trees reported across the state.

Washington D C January 28 The President after Attorney General advice will appoint Edward Kent of Colorado Assistant United States Attorney to succeed Webster Street as Chief Justice of Arizona when Street's term ends in March Kent son of the late Maine governor Kent and an old friend of President Roosevelt will take the Arizona post at the request of Ex Senator Wolcott.
Ten persons perished in a blaze at an Italian lodging house on Fleet Street in Boston early today. Four others were injured by jumping from windows. Loss was reported as only a few dollars.
FINDLAY Ohio January 29 Mrs Blanche Barndt nineteen year old wife of Benjamin Barndt an oil worker took her life this afternoon by swallowing arsenic They were married in August This morning she said before she died her husband swore at her because she asked for 60 cents to buy clothing for an expected baby After he left she took the arsenic and died in terrible agony several hours later
Des Moines reports Mrs. Shaw, wife of ex Governor Shaw, bought a Davenport valued at 275 dollars after an agent of a Chicago art publishing firm offered a testimonial. She denies giving such testimonial and says she paid 9 dollars for a series of art prints and selected the finest Davenport as a premium.
Advices report Mr and Mrs James Thompson found frozen to death after fleeing their burning ranch near Colorado Springs. Their clothing was burned away and the house ruined. Mrs Thompson is identified as a Saxton stepdaughter from Pennsylvania.
In Clinton Iowa on January 29 doctor Paul Walter reported a pioneering cornea graft from a live Hudson hare to William Stickell. After ten days of healing the bandages were removed and Stickell can see light and may read again, though inflammation remains.
Washington reports a likely long Senate fight over canal routes with stalemate possible. Supporters of Nicaragua and critics of Panama clash with railroad interests and concerns over title and commissions. The Panama stock is valued at par despite market value, and Colombia may permit sale and lease of canal passage lands.
