Stories of Scotch judges in old Edinburgh courts
Lord Salvesen recalls a time when life was cheap and judges showed levity in deadly cases. Sir Francis Bacon faced a merciless plea from a culprit who used kinship as a gag. Braxfield prized convictions and taunted a friend juryman to help hang “damned scoundrels.” In 1870 Lord Raimes, chess partner to Matthew Hay, called verdicts checkmate.

Clock All of Glass by Bohemian Craftsman
A 71 year old Bohemian glass polisher, Joseph Bayer, has built a glass clock in Theresien thal after six years of work. Every part except the spring is glass, including the frame, dial, hands, cogs, and even the key. The clock required repeated remakes, some up to 40 attempts, before it ran accurately. Bayer values the finished piece at 2,500 marks about $625, noting Bohemian labor is inexpensive.
