New York Health Commissioner Darling releases 1906 vital statistics for Greater New York. The report shows 111,772 births, about 8,000 more than 1905, 48,355 marriages, up 2,700, and 716,208 deaths, an increase of 2,492, with the figures seen as indicating a prosperous year.
National Banks increased notes by 55,248,122 while December 31, 1906 debtless treasury cash stood at 940,071,777. Debt totals include 922,421,880 interest bearing and 400,232,208 non interest bearing, with certificates offset by cash on hand of 1,121,986,869. Cash on hand after liabilities is 388,997,076 with gold reserve 150,000,000 and trust funds 1,121,986,869.
Springfield Illinois teachers in convention deem resolutions on legislation futile and plan renewed certification actions this winter under five supervisors to monitor the legislature. Near Carlyle seven oil companies lease land for wells with thirty thousand acres leased. Henry Spencer leads with options on 14 thousand acres. A landowner north of Carlyle reported oil flow at 95 feet while drilling.

Lawful money circulation totaled 46,882,385 dollars, up 10,810,856 for the year and 483,283 for the month. Bonds on deposit to secure circulating notes were 551,263,840 dollars and 166,824,206 dollars to secure public deposits.
A head on crash four miles west of Volland Kansas on the Chicago Rock Island Pacific line killed over thirty people and injured 55. Two passenger trains Nos 29 and 30 bound Chicago to El Paso met on a sharp curve at 6 10 am, with fire spreading through cars. Telegraph operator John Lynes 19 at Volland is held for investigation for failing to stop No 29. Five minutes earlier operators along the line knew the collision was certain but could not avert it.

Carlinville Spbdttwood H Burton of Gillespie died at his residence. He was about 80 years old and had prospered as a merchant in the area for about fifty years. For the last five years he had retired from business and lived with his daughter at the old home place.
C Jenkins aged 56, super intendent of Big Muddy Mine No 7 for 12 years, died at Herrin. Formerly supervised Murphysboro mines, buried locally under Masons. Estate valued at $40 000.
Patrick Galvin, a 79 year old war veteran, was found dead in bed at a boarding house in Murphysboro. He came to town in May 1906 and had not received mail except his pension. he never mentioned any relatives.
Carmi James Hardin longtime resident of Carmi died at 77 after a paralysis strike on Christmas Day. He lived in the city for more than fifty years and is survived by three children.
Mrs. Henry Anderson of Canbridge, wife of a prominent retired farmer, was killed in her bed. An unidentified shooter is believed responsible. A man of African descent was arrested in Galva, about 15 miles away, and is being held as the murderer.
Clay City Charles L. Ferris, a former member of the legislature who represented the Forty-fourth district for two terms, died at his Louisville home after an unsuccessful bid for renomination.
Springfield President Shryock of Southern Illinois Normal at Carbondale tells the state teachers association that improving trained teacher supply requires higher salaries. The remarks emphasize better compensation as key to attracting and retaining educators.
Judge Emory H Slate of Waterloo died suddenly at his home aged 81. He was a Civil War veteran and served as a Republican presidential elector in 1888.
