The board accepted his voluntary leave starting Dec 1 until the charges are resolved. Hastings pled innocent to mail fraud and false statements tied to alleged payroll kickbacks involving ex-employees. The group endorsed Hastings for re election and offered continued pay.
Beginning Sept 30 detours around the Washington Avenue bridge on I 90 will close left turns at exit 7 for about a month. Northbound travelers from exit 7 divert to exit 9 with a temporary signal guiding turns onto Route 4 toward Defreestville. Southbound Washington Avenue traffic continues.
New York State Lottery Director John Quinn disclosed that every Empire Stakes ticket has at least one duplicate, down to each serial number. He noted the duplication stems from computerization, does not alter odds, and aims to save printing costs while acknowledging security issues.
Larry Bridges 26 of North Syracuse pleaded guilty to a reduced criminally negligent homicide charge in the July 22 beating death of Air Force Airman Ricky G. Hasman of Rochester. He is one of four Hancock Air Force Base servicemen facing charges. other defendants are Gerald J. McConnell 19 of the Bronx Frederick T. Carroll 18 of North Merrick and David A. Rock 20 of Cohoes. Ulster County voters will see Kingston attorney Joseph D. Saccoman as the Republican candidate for the Supreme Court judgeship covering Albany Rensselaer Ulster and four other counties. Conservative John J. Schick also seeks the post with 11 of 13 votes. Democrats nominated Aaron E. Klein for the same judgeship. The seat opens as Judge DeForest C. Pitt retires at 70. Saccoman has served as law secretary to an Ulster County Court judge since 1971 and as Kingston City Court judge.

The Presidential Search Committee chose 43 year old Dr. Joseph S. Murphy after reviewing about 300 applications and recommendations. Murphy, former president of Queens College, will take office after Gail Parker's January departure with interim leaders G. Iseman and R. Woodworth assisting until Murphy begins January 1.
