Nigeria Forces Enter Benin City as Rebels Declare Independent State

Federal troops moved into Benin City 12 hours after rebels proclaimed an independent republic in the Midwest and pledged cooperation with Biafra. British reports said troops arrived at King's Square amid firing near the city center, while crowds cheered the entry and all foreign nationals were declared safe.
