Sewer blast cracks windows at Mechanicville home

A blast from a sewer construction project damaged the siding and broke windows at Leo LeFebvre’s 132 First St home in Mechanicville at noon Monday. Thalle Construction superintendent Richard Cipriani said workers used less powder than usual and disputed police estimates. The company will cover repairs and the homeowners did not seek further action.

Scotia man arrested on rape charges

John Bemis, 25, of 99 Saratoga Rd., Scotia, was arrested by State Police and charged with third degree rape in connection with two incidents involving a 16 year old girl. He was arraigned at Burnt Hills Ballston Lake High School, jailed in Saratoga County, and facing further court appearances. The charge applies when the victim is under 17 and the suspect is five years older.

Lions Club names new committees for year

Schuylerville Lions Club held its first meeting of the season at Old Saratoga Tavern on Sept. 8 naming committees for sight conservation and community service projects. K Walter Gram presided as King Lion with Gordon Stanley reading minutes and Glen Gray participating. A glazed chicken dinner was served. next meeting is Sept. 22 at 7 p.m.

First Ballston Spa pictorial on sale and second edition planned

The first edition of Through the Years, a 72 page hard bound pictorial of Ballston Spa from 1795 to 1975, is available at Brookside Museum through Friday. The initial 500 copies are stamped, 250 sold in advance will be hand numbered, and a second edition of 500 copies is ordered with shipments expected by September.

Mechanicville Lions Club names committee chairmen

The Mechanicville Lions Club announced administrative chairs Frank Bruno George Kaulfuss Matthew Reilly John Kipp Angelo Michele and greeter Reilly membership Frank Izzo and program and public relations. Activities chairs include Angelo DeCrescente Anthony Cocozzo Fred Donovan Harry Clements San Palmieri and Kipp. Perfect attendance awards for 1975 76 went to Kaulfuss Izzo and Bruno. A dinner meeting is planned today at Joyce's Log Cabin followed by a board meeting.

Barge to Visit Mechanicville for Bicentennial Festival

The Bicentennial Barge will tie up at Mechanicville City Dock on Terminal Street for two days 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The event draws plans for crowds possibly between 15 000 and 50 000 with tents exhibits and Main Street closures. City officials police and local merchants brace for the weekend festival.

Final registration days at St. Paul and Assumption parishes

Mechanicville Woman Receives Second Medical Scholarship

Deborah Forino, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Forino, of 147 North Main St., Mechanicville, has won a second scholarship to attend Upstate Medical College in Syracuse. The award comes from Local 12 of the Iron Workers Union in Albany and confirms her status as a second-year medical student and Mechanicville High School graduate.

Cancer Society delegates to attend 52nd New York meeting

Dr. R Lee Clark of Houston Texas vice president and president elect of the National American Cancer Society will be principal speaker Friday at the 52nd annual meeting of the New York State Division American Cancer Society in Syracuse. From Saratoga County Unit will attend Dr Warren Gewant Dr Harvey Kalish Rev Betsy Davis. Committee members include Mrs Gloria Wheeler and Mrs Frances Yankowski.
