Surplus War Sales May Cut Public Debt
A 1945 proposal in Congress to apply surplus war property receipts against the national debt is questioned. Budget officials estimate war costs through June 1945 at about 289.5 million dollars, with salvageable surplus property likely to yield only pennies on the dollar. Treasury officials say earmarking 35 billion dollars from surplus sales to reduce debt would be ineffective despite some lawmakers backing the idea.

Postwar debt retirement plan faces Treasury opposition
The piece argues against earmarking postwar receipts for debt retirement. It notes public pressure to cut taxes and reduce deficits after the war, warning that diverting surplus sales revenue would force higher future taxes and increased national expenditures. Assistant Secretary Daniel W. Bell says Treasury opposes any debt retirement legislation until a formal plan is presented.
