Cohoes Mayor Vets Veto Over Police and Fire Pay Law

Mayor James E. McDonald used the item veto to strike down Alderman Frank M. Rourke's local law that would have granted pay raises for police and firemen through the council. He said the measure requires a tax increase and would deprive voters of a referendum in the upcoming general election. The veto returns the bill to the Common Council, which could override it with a two thirds majority. A separate bill by Council President Curran to place the question on the November ballot was signed into law.
