Minimum Farm Wage Law Urged in New York
Herbert W. Crispell of the New York State Dept of Labor urged a state minimum wage for farm workers. A proposed scale starts at 1.30 to 1.40 per hour, with 10 cent increases each year through 1971. The plan would cover 90 to 95 percent of farm workers, while 60 percent of farms with small payrolls would be exempt. Federal standards currently cover about 11,000 workers, set to rise to 1.15 next year and 1.30 in 1969.
