Watervliet K of C Council Traces 1896 Founding
Watervliet Council K of C traces its origins to December 6 1896 when Michael I Walsh was named first grand knight. Early meetings were at Royal Arcanum Hall Broadway and 16th Street, later moving to Biermaster building then Brown Building as membership grew. By 1910 the council settled at 1468 Broadway with John T Martucci as current grand knight and about 350 members.

The Waterville Masonic Club at 1588 Broadway serves Evening Star Lodge F and AM and Hudson River Chapter RAM. The temple rooms occupy the second floor while the first floor provides a reading-ling room pool cards cribbage and space for large dinners for members of both fraternities.

Leland Stanford Native of City
Watervliet notes that Leland Stanford a native born in 1824 rose to fame as a California statesman and railroad leader. He helped nominate Lincoln in 1860 and led Central Pacific Rail Road later becoming governor and senator. Stanford founded Stanford University with a $20 million gift and died in 1893. His widow Jane Stanford of Albany died in 1905.

Gem Truck Plan In Watervliet Never Reached Production
In 1920 a Watervliet auto venture named Truck Business Watervliet proposed a Gem truck to be built on 17th street near the river. Buildings planned for 16th to 17th streets were never completed and production did not start, though one or two pilot Gem trucks were produced.
