History Of City Marked By Confusion Over Name
The Watervliet area has carried many names since its 17th century origins including Port Schuyler Gibbons ville West Troy and Watervliet. Dutch etymology suggests flowing streams and flat overflow zones and the post office long used West Troy despite an official 1896 change. Population hovered around 15 thousand through mid 20th century and the city once hosted a ferry at 15th street linked to Revolutionary War troop movements and nearby battles.
