Miami area swirls with a developing tropical low that could become the eighth tropical storm of the season, with the National Hurricane Center forecasting west-northwest drift toward Bermuda and Miami over the next 24 hours.
Members of the Prospect Hill Community Association voted to reactivate after nearly two years dormancy. James Fitz gerald was named chairman, with a building assessment and nonprofit status review under way. Residents will be visited next week to explain the reactivation and collect dues, and outreach will invite Swayze Acres and Shulusky Estates to join. The next meeting is Monday October 30 at 8 p.m.
The Waterford Home Bureau meets tomorrow at 10 a.m. in the Waterford Town Hall Community Room for a lesson in Rope Beads taught by Mrs. Maude Redman. A 1 p.m. business meeting led by chairman Mrs. John M. Harney will collect 1968 dues and names Mrs. Joseph Stewart and Mrs John F. Harney aslostes.
GOP candidate J Joseph Corrigan commended volunteers at a meeting with candidates and workers for helping educate residents on personal registration. He noted about 3930 voters registered, a figure he says reflects those likely to vote, while disputing a claim of a town registration record.
The Waterford Citizens Party auxiliary will sponsor a food sale on Saturday Oct 28 starting at 9 am until everything is sold. Maloney's Flower Shop is used for the event. Cochairmen Mrs Kenneth Graham and Mrs Lionel Bechard say a larger salad and bean selection will be available due to demand. Call for details to those not contacted.
The Women's Society of Christian Service of the Waterford Methodist Church meets today at 8 p.m. under Mrs. Merle Doud with worship led by Mrs. Harold Robinson. Mrs. Robert Lauber presides over the business meeting. hostesses are Mrs. George King and Mrs. Edward Beaudoin. The Youth Choir of the First Presbyterian and First Baptist Churches plans resumed rehearsals Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Presbyterian church for youths aged 7 to 14 to join.
Superintendent Charles M. Fitzpatrick announces State Education Information Day to gather data for the new school year. Waterford Halfmoon High School dismisses at 12 30 p.m. and elementary grades at 1 p.m. to observe the day.
Girls To Meet Junior and Cadette Troops 215 resume meetings today at 7 p.m. in St Anne's parish hall. Both old and new members must be accompanied by a parent.
Waterford Police Chief Arthur Fredette warned that vandalism rising in the town will not be tolerated. He told parents that every incident will be acted on under the law and consequences will follow.
The Whitehall Chamber of Commerce named a committee to nominate 18 candidates for nine directorships. President Elba St Claire will not seek another term. Ballots will be sent to members to select nine directors who will then choose officers. The chamber also sponsors a basketball game at the high school on Friday night November 24 and the Ambrose Gilligan testimonial dinner at Whitehall Armory on October 28.
James G. Brown of 69 Maple Ave Saratoga Springs a Perry Taxi driver was arrested for failure to yield the right of way after a two car crash at High Rock Avenue and Empire Hill. A passenger Sophia Martino 46 of 634 North Broadway Saratoga Springs was treated at Saratoga Hospital for injuries to her left shoulder arm and neck. Brown failed to yield as his taxi collided with Allen Hotaling 60 of RD2 Gansevoort. Police Patrolmen Donald Ely and Eugene Coie investigated.
About 400 parents of Skidmore College freshmen will visit Saratoga Springs for Parents Day events. They will meet faculty advisers and tour with their daughters. An orientation program at College Hall features President Dr Joseph Co. Paramoutain, with speeches by Provost Moseley, Dean MacRory, and Dean Olds.
Dr Claire M Olds dean of students at Skidmore College visits St Peter's College Jersey City today and tomorrow as official observer for the Commission on Institutions of Higher Learning. The trip assesses how well the needs and interests of women students are being met since St Peter's became coeducational in 1966.
Berlin Central School adds furniture refinishing and photography to its adult education program per director Philip Garippa. Walter Fogg will teach both courses, with furniture refinishing registration at 7 30 p m Monday in the high school shop and photography registration at 7 30 p m Thursday October 26 in Room 103. mail registrations to the director if in person signing is not possible.
Violent incidents hit several states as truck drivers strike continues. Rocks pelted 12 rigs on the Pennsylvania Turnpike near Somerset. a driver was fired at in Connecticut. another truck shot at near Westport Connecticut and West Stockbridge Massachusetts. Stones also hit rigs near Washington and Jamestown Pennsylvania. No injuries reported. A guard kept an Ohio bridge near Youngstown under armed protection after a bomb threat. Windshields were smashed on 11 trucks from the Youngstown plant. National Steel Carriers Association chair Howard Miller said a revised plan may be accepted, proposing 13.70 per hour for waiting trucks after four hours, with at least 10 per hour for drivers and varying shares for firms.
Announcement by Supt Herford A Smith says classes in the Sale Supervisory District of Rensselaer County will not meet at the Occupational Center on Hoosick Street nor at George Washington School or Berlin Central School today. The measure aims to aid prompt submission of reports for the county boards of cooperative educational services and to allow staff conferences. Out of county schools are affected as students attend required courses in their districts half the day and study at the center the other half.
Washington AP reports government buys of surplus butter since April 1 reach 162 million pounds, with cheese purchases totaling 119 million pounds, both up from the same period last year.

The Saratoga County Unit of the American Cancer Society received a New York State Division professional education award for its nurse open house, the first in the state. Executive Director Eleanor B. Kenyon announced the honor, and Dr. Franklin D. McCanty accepted it from T. Elmer Bogardus, retiring state division board chair.
