First Automobiles Grow From Many Ideas
The credit for inventing the first automobile goes to no single person. By 1769 Nicholas Joseph Cugnot built a steam powered three wheeler, and Oliver Evans earned the first U.S. patent for a self propelled carriage in 1780. The 1880s brought key advances with gasoline engines and air filled tires, leading to Daimler’s 1887 car and the Duryea brothers’ 1892 93 American model.
