No delay in opening of McGregor facility

Albany The state Commission of Corrections denied a 30 day extension for opening a prison at the former Wilton School on Mt McGregor with 150 minimum security prisoners set to begin Nov 1. The panel did order more fencing and lighting and noted the plan to move 250 medium security inmates by year's end.

Fire insurance jumps 430 percent for Mechanicville schools

Mechanicville schools face a fire insurance increase from $1,224 to $6,487 over four years with only one claim of $202.50, amid calls that rates are exorbitant. The board cited a state wide rating system and noted rising general liability costs, while other coverages varied. The district also approved personnel moves and upcoming trips, and anticipated federal funds for a high school addition.

Hadley Man Hospitalized After One-Car Crash

Rexford A. Phenes, 25, of Conklinville Road, Hadley, was driving east on County Route 4 when his pickup ran off the road and struck a pole in Day town. He was taken to Adirondack Regional Hospital by Corinth Rescue Squad. condition not released. State Police Trooper P J Madig investigated.

Hilton Industries to close Glens Falls plant

Hilton Industries will shut its electronic component plant in Glens Falls early next year, putting about 100 workers out of work. About 35 employees will transfer to a new plant in Sarasota, Florida, as the firm consolidates operations citing New York taxes. The company produced tantalum anodes and tantalum capacitors.

Three Vermonters arrested in Manchester bartender slaying

Michael J. Martin 23 of North Clarendon Richard Minckler 25 and Bonnie Kinney 17 of Rutland were charged with first degree murder in the Tuesday early morning shooting death of Harry Cirelli 51 at the Palace Restaurant and Motel Manchester. All three remanded to Rutland Correctional Center with bail set at 125000 for Martin and 100000 each for Minckler and Kinney.
