Tanners at mercy of British monopoly on tannin material

Assistant Attorney General Wendell Berge told a Senate subcommittee that American leather tanners rely on a British dominated pool for quebracho extract. He said the cartel restricts supply and inflates prices, urging a domestic substitute to end dependence on foreign control and safeguard the U.S. industry. He noted five of 22 producers are linked to Forestal Land Timber & Railways Ltd, with about 57 percent of capacity.
